Notre Dame has fired coach Charlie Weis who has coached Notre Dame for five years and leaves with a 35-27 record. This comes from a source close to the Notre Dame program told the New York Daily News. IrishIllustrated.com also reported that Weis will meet with his team on Monday afternoon to discuss the future of the program and the coach's dismissal imminent.
This comes as no surprise to fans and players as the rumors have been traveling through the Internet sports channels since Saturday night's 45-38 loss to Stanford.
The initial confirmation of the Charlie Weis firing was in the NY Daily News. The person then confirmed the firing to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the official announcement had yet to be made. An announcement by the school was expected later Monday.
Weis has six years left on a 10-year contract signed midway through his first season, just after a game against top-ranked USC that ended in a 34-31 loss.
In the end, Weis went 35-27 in his five years as the head coach of Notre Dame, a .565 winning percentage that was worse than the .583 posted by his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, who were also fired.
Charlie Weis was not in his office early Monday. The planned Monday afternoon meeting will include a vote on whether the players want to play in a bowl game and that is likely to be when a formal announcement of the firing of Coach Charlie Weis will be announced. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will consider the players’ wishes in deciding on a bowl trip.
If Charlie Weis is indeed fired from Notre Dame, he will likely be heading back to the NFL, where many believe he belongs. Speculation is that he would be most likely to end up with the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs or back with the New England Patriots.
