Umaga Eddie Fatu Dead, WWE Issues Statement

The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) posted their condolences on their website when it was announced tonight that Eddie (Ekmo)Fatu, formerly known as Umaga, died at the age of 36. His death was apparently caused by a second heart attack he suffered while in a coma in a Houston, Texas hospital. He was surrounded by family and friends.

Eddie Fatu (Umaga)was hospitalized after his wife found him not breathing with blood coming out of his nose. It was reported that Fatu had suffered a heart attack and was put on life support, until the decision was made to take him off of it. Fatu was presumed dead around 6:00 PM EST, after suffering a second heart attack

Fatu recently was in a WWE wrestling match as "The Samoan Bulldozer" Umaga and was known best in the wrestling circles simply as Umaga. He had many setbacks that prevented him from rising to the top of the wrestling world. Injuries and suspensions plagued the 36 year old Eddie Fatu and ultimately his short life ended any chance of him being a top wrestling star.

Umaga's Last Man Standing WWE Title Match with John Cena at Royal Rumble 2007 was said to be one of his best matches. On June 23, 2008, Umaga was drafted from the Raw brand to the SmackDown brand, as a part of the 2008 WWE Draft.

Unfortunately, Fatu was released from WWE earlier this year due to failing a Wellness test. After refusing to enter rehab, WWE dismissed him.

Fatu worked for other names in the WWE. In 2002-2003 he worked for the WWE under the name Jamal with the Three Minute Warning tag team. He was a member of the Anoa'i wrestling family and frequently worked as a part of a tag team – variously named The Island Boyz, the Samoan Gangstas, and 3-Minute Warning – with his cousin Matt Anoa'i.

Eddie Fatu, formerly known as Umaga, was born in American Samoa, a member of the famous Anoa'i wrestling family. His mother, Vera, was the sister of Afa and Sika of the Wild Samoans, and his later Umaga gimmick would be compared to their "wildness".

Fatu's two older brothers, Sam (better known as Tonga Kid and Tama) and Solofa Jr. (better known as Rikishi), are also professional wrestlers who have achieved success of their own. Dwayne Johnson, known in wrestling as The Rock, is his cousin.

The WWE issued this statement today:

"WWE would like to express its deepest condolences to Mr. Fatu’s family, friends and fans on his tragic passing. Mr. Fatu was under contract with WWE at various time periods and most recently performed under the name "Umaga." Mr. Fatu's contract was terminated on June 11, 2009."
