Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and his wife were reportedly involved in a three-car accident that fatally injured 30 year old Suejas Estrada on Friday. The accident happened about 1 p.m. ET as Brokaw was driving in the left lane of the northbound Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx. Brokaw and his wife were uninjured but the driver of the third vehicle, a mail truck, was injured.
CNN reported that this tragic accident was caused by a spool of cable that was bouncing in the far right lane. The driver who was killed in the accident was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition and swerved to avoid the cable spool.
At that point, police indicated Suejas Estrada lost control of her SUV and it overturned, colliding with a mail truck. The Brokaws said the out-of-control Expedition forced the mail truck into the couple's lane. The truck collided with Brokaw's vehicle.
Suejas Estrada of the Bronx was thrown from the Expedition and killed. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the mail truck was taken to the hospital by ambulance and is in stable condition.
Brokaw, 69, retired as NBC anchor in 2004 and was succeeded by Brian Williams. Brokaw and his wife, Meredith, said in a statement they were "greatly saddened by this loss of life." Brokaw didn't say in his statement where the couple was headed at the time.
