Study Shows America's Best High Schools of 2010

If you have a child in high school or entering high school soon, you might be curious how your local high school stacks up against other schools in the United States. U.S. News Media Group, who puts out U.S. News and World Report, today released its third edition of America's Best High Schools. Earning the top honors is the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia.

More than 22,000 high schools were analyzed for the report and the results gave recognition to nearly 1800 schools in 48 states and the District of Columbia. The America's Best High Schools are categorized in one of four categories: Gold, Silver, Bronze or Honorable Mention.

The criteria used in the study that will be published in the December 29 issue of U.S. News and World Report is:

1. Attains performance levels that exceed statistical expectations given the school's student body, as measured by state accountability test scores for all the school's students in the core subjects of reading and math;
2. Achieves proficiency rates on state tests for their least advantaged student groups that exceed state averages; and
3. Prepares its students for college, as measured by student participation in and performance on Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.

The report noted that the states of Nebraska and Oklahoma did not have enough data available for analysis. Schools in these states were considered for honorable mention but none of them met the criteria.

The top 10 high schools in the report are as follows:

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
Alexandria, VA

International Academy
Bloomfield Hills, MI

Whitney High School
Cerritos, CA

Oxford Academy
Cypress, CA

School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
Dallas, TX

Newcomers High School
Long Island City, NY

Pacific Collegiate School
Santa Cruz, CA

School of Science and Engineering Magnet
Dallas, TX

BASIS Tucson
Tucson, AZ

The report is very detailed and parents can explore the many options for public high schools-- including charter and magnet schools -- and compare an extensive amount of data. This is very important information for families who are relocating or those who are interested in how their child's school ranked in the study.
