The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)reported a 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck off of California's northern coast at approximately 4:30 pm PT on Saturday about 25 miles from Eureka. There were no reports of major damage or injuries but some residents of nearby Ferndale, California reported downed phone lines and broken windows. There were reports of gas leaks and items falling but no reports of building collapses.
Ferndale is 265 miles north of San Francisco and 12 miles south of Eureka, California. The USGS reported that the quake was felt as far south as Capitola in central California, and as far north as Tiller in central Oregon.
There were two very insignificant earthquakes in the Bay area of California Thursday and Friday.
There were many reported earthquakes in 2009 and it seems as if 2010 is starting out with a rumble. At least 1783 deaths worldwide resulted from earthquake activity in 2009.
The deadliest earthquake of 2009 was a magnitude 7.5 event that killed approximately 1117 people in southern Sumatra, Indonesia on September 30. However, the number of earthquake-related fatalities in 2009 was far less than the 2008 count of over 88,000.
