Russian hockey game canceled due to fight

Fights break out on the ice in American hockey constantly but it was Russian ice hockey that made the news today with a game cancellation due to fighting. Players of West Siberia's Omsk Avangard and Vityaz Chekhov from the Moscow region started a fight minutes after the game started. The first fight was followed by another scuffle which prompted an immediate cancellation of the hockey match.

The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) is an international professional ice hockey league in Eurasia founded in 2008. As of 2009, it is ranked as the strongest hockey league in Europe. The league was formed in 2008 from a predecessor organization, the Russian Superleague.

As players exchanged punches on the ice in the beginning of the game, they were prohibited from playing. When the second fight broke out, there were so few players left that the entire game had to be cancelled between the teams from West Siberia and Moscow.

There was an emergency meeting held Sunday to decide on how to punish the players for the on-ice fights.
