Golden Globes Red Carpet 2010: Umbrellas are big fashion accessory

The umbrellas were out in full force on the 2010 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Sunday night. From basic black to designer umbrellas, the must-have accessory of the evening helped to shield celebrities' glamorous evening wear from the pouring rain. The wet weather didn't damper the spirits of the nominees, presenters and guests on the Red Carpet and seeing who held their own umbrella and who enlisted help was quite amusing.

The most popular umbrella carried on the Golden Globes Red Carpet was the oversized red-and-white striped umbrella stamped with The Beverly Hilton logo. The hotel was doing a brisk umbrella business today.

Ginnifer Goodwin and Penélope Cruz carried their own umbrellas on the Red Carpet and Neil Patrick Harris got resourceful at the last minute -- he stopped at The Gap to get an umbrella on his way to the Golden Globes. Way to stimulate the economy, Mr. Harris.

Some of the A-listers walking the carpet into the Beverly Hilton Hotel didn't carry their own umbrella and relied on a little help from an umbrella caddy of sorts. Sandra Bullock was one who kept her hands free while making the walk into the 67th Golden Globe Awards.

Aside from the big trend in umbrellas as accessories, the Red Carpet was a glamorous parade of designer gowns of every color and style. Men were in classic tuxes, suits and some in their own creation of "evening wear."

Highlights from the Red Carpet

Olivia Wilde, from the very popular show “House” showed off an amazing black sparkling dress with silver sequins by Gucci and carried off a plunging neckline with class. She will be donating her gown for an auction to benefit the people of Haiti.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was a stunner in a mermaid gown by Roland Mouret. Simple with just enough detail, Maggie looked gorgeous but not overdone.

Alexander Skarsgard looked dapper in a classic tux that was said to be a Tom Ford. His gold cufflinks were quite noticeable as he signed the Chrysler 300 Eco Style car for the charity Stars for a Cause. The Chrysler will be auctioned off with proceeds going to a relief fund for the people in Haiti.

Julia Roberts changed thing up this year by showing up in a finely tailored black tuxedo with a black silk shirt and open toe shoes. This was gorgeous on her, although she always turns heads on the red carpet whether it's a gown or a pants suit.

Julianne Moore walked the carpet with a really disappointing dress that was perhaps better for a bridal shower than the Golden Globe Awards. Her fair complexion and auburn hair did not mesh well with the drab peach belted knee length dress. The strangely puffy shoulders were reminiscent of a dress from the 1980's. Not a great choice for Julianne Moore.

George Clooney always wears a classic tux for the big awards nights and tonight was no different. Clooney, up for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture in Up in the Air, wore a Giorgio Armani two-button shawl collar tuxedo. His best accessory was his beautiful girlfriend, Elisabetta and his only downfall? He should have shaved for the awards show. Then again, he's been working hard on his upcoming telethon to raise money for Haiti, so there was likely no time to shave.

The night is in full swing now with all the celebrities out of the rain and off the red carpet. The Golden Globe Awards 2010 is underway with a big night ahead for the nominees.
