It is an epic upset tonight in Massachusetts with Republican Scott Brown declared the winner of the US Senate seat that the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy held for nearly half a century. President Obama came to Boston to rally for opponent Martha Coakley on Sunday but that didn't help her win the coveted position in this special election. It was truly the 'amazing race' in the Bay State.
Brown will now become the 41st Republican in the 100-member Senate, which might allow the GOP to block the president's health care legislation and the rest of his agenda. This is exactly why Democrats needed Martha Coakley to win. She was said to be a "shoe-in" for the Senate seat but Brown made an amazing race to the finish line.
The turnout at the polls today was heavy despite the weather which was a typical New England combination of snow and rain. Messy weather didn't stop people from placing their vote, especially since the push was on for many to put Brown in the Senate seat.
Wall Street was even part of this well-watched political race. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 116 points today. Some analysts attributed the increase to hopes the election would make it a lot harder for Obama to make his intended health care changes.
Across the media channels, the buzz was all about this historical campaign for the US Senate seat. There were no exit polls in place, so it was a long wait for many. It may go down in history as the special election that turned into one of the country’s greatest political upsets.
Winner Scott Brown was out early today to vote and then spent much of the day working on his rally speech that will happen tonight. "It would make everybody the 41st senator, and it would bring fairness and discussion back to the equation," the state senator said of a potential victory.
