James Mitchell dies, All My Children soap opera star

James Mitchell, who played the role of Palmer Cortlandt on All My Children for 30 years, died Friday at the age of 89. Mitchell suffered recently from pneumonia and battled heart disease for many years. His cause of death has been reported as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated by pneumonia.

Mitchell last appeared on daytime television's long running All My Children earlier in January for the show's 40th anniversary episode. His role as the ruthless Palmer Cortlandt was a major character in the hit soap opera. James Mitchell played the wealthy patriarch of the Cortland family and the rival of the other well-to-do family in town -- The Chandlers.

Although Mitchell was best known for his role on the ABC soap opera, he will also be remembered as one of Agnes de Mille's leading dancers. Mitchell's work with Agnes de Mille included his first performance in 1944 as the principal dancer and assistant choreographer in Bloomer Girl.

James Mitchell also performed, to name a few, in the Broadway hits, Brigadoon, Paint Wagon and Come Summer. One of Mitchell's more notable roles was as "dream Curly" in the 1955 production of Oklahoma!

James Mitchell leaves behind his partner, costume designer Albert Wolsky.
