Airline security officials in the U.S. are on heightened alert as they look for possible female suicide bombers on inbound flights to the United States. It has been reported that Northwest airlines bomber, Umar Abdulmutallab, has given authorities information that these women may have been trained by Al Qaeda in Yemen. The females in question may have a non-Arab appearance and be traveling on Western passports.
former White House counterterrorism official Richard Clarke and ABC News consultant stated, "There are others who are still out there who have been trained and who are clean skins -- that means people who we do not have a record of, people who may not look like al Qaeda terrorists, who may not be Arabs, and may not be men."
In what may be a big red flag, an unusually high number of people on the no-fly list were prohibited from boarding US flights in a 48-hour period last weekend. Two passengers were stopped at London's Heathrow Airport bound for flights to Miami and Chicago. Four others were stopped attempting to board flights in Nairobi, Kenya, Saint Maarten, Fort Lauderdale and Minneapolis. None of the passengers were allowed on a flight but were not detained.
As far as the female suicide bombers, the "underwear bomber", Umar Abdulmutallab, has given the FBI names and descriptions of others who trained with him in Yemen. It is believed that Al Qaeda is trying to put together an attack using people that won't be highly profiled and using women with a more "westernized" appearance may be part of their plan.
