Pernell Robert dies, Bonanza and Trapper John star

Pernell Roberts, 81, was the last surviving member of the Bonanza western series cast. He died of cancer Sunday at his Malibu home. Roberts was best known for his roles as Adam Cartwright on Bonanza and as chief surgeon, Dr. John MacIntyre, on Trapper John, M.D.

Roberts surprised everyone in Hollywood by leaving TV's very popular show Bonanza after six years. He reportedly had disagreements with writers on the show and wanted to return to the theater to act.

Pernell Roberts re-joined the television world in another popular show, Trapper John, M.D. in 1979. He played the role of Dr. John MacIntyre in the medical drama that aired until 1986.

He continued to work in television as a guest star on many shows such as Gunsmoke, Mannix, The Odd Couple and Hawaii Five-O. Pernell Roberts' last television appearance was in a 20012001 episode of Diagnosis Murder.

Roberts married four times. Three ended in divorce and he was married to Eleanor Criswell when he died on January 24, 2010. His son, Jonathan Roberts died in a motorcycle accident in 1989 at age 38.
