Toronto Symphony Presents Maxim Vengerov

One night only at Roy Thomson Hall! Tuesday, April 17, 2007. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to announce a special concert on April 17 with Grammy Award-winning violinist Maxim Vengerov and the outstanding young musicians of the UBS Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. This concert is a rare opportunity for audiences to witness Vengerov both 'on the podium' and off!

Vengerov will conduct the UBS Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra as well as perform as soloist in Mozart's Violin ConcertoNo. 1 in B-Flat, K. 207, Violin Concerto No. 5 in A, K. 219 and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in E-Flat, K. 364 (with Lawrence Power, viola). The evening will also include Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony in C Minor, Opus 110a.

One of the world's most exciting violin virtuosos, Maxim Vengerov will unveil his new interpretations of the Mozart violin concertos which emerged from a profound study of the composer during Vengerov's sabbatical year in 2005. During that time, Vengerov and the UBS Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra retreated to an Israeli kibbutz for three weeks where they experimented with these works.

On March 27, EMI Classics will release the first in a series of recordings featuring the complete Mozart violin concertos performed with the UBS Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. In addition to soloist, this is Vengerov's debut recording as a conductor, guiding the orchestra from the violin.

Vengerov's first appeared as a guest artist with the TSO in 2001 with Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D, Op. 61. Subsequently, he performed Britten's Violin Concerto in 2003 and Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 77 last June.

The UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra comprises over 100 musicians ages 17 to 29 from 30 countries. It was jointly conceived in 2000 by the financial services group UBS and Martin Engstroem, Executive Director of the prestigious Swiss summer music festival and institute, the Verbier Festival & Academy. The goal was to create an opportunity for young artists from around the world to work and tour with leading international conductors and soloists.

The UBS Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra - the smaller touring ensemble that will be visiting Toronto - will next travel to New York, Vienna, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Dublin, Glasgow, London, and Tokyo. The Toronto concert is part of a national exchange program that will also bring the Quebec Symphony Orchestra (April 11), the National Arts Centre Orchestra (April 19), and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (April 21) to Roy Thomson Hall. In return, the TSO will tour to Ottawa (April 16), Quebec City (April 17), and Montreal (April 18 and 19). -- www.tso.ca
