Washington National Opera stages the critically acclaimed production of Jenůfa in its Washington premiere on May 5 with an incomparable international cast staring Patricia Racette in the title role, Catherine Malfitano as Kostelnicka Buryjovka, Kim Begley as Laca Klemen, Raymond Very as Steva Buryja, and Judith Christin as Grandmother Buryjovka.
The tragedy of infanticide and a woman's disfigurement builds to a dramatic tale of redemption and forgiveness in this tale of two half brothers both in love with their cousin. Renowned Czech maestro JiřàBÄ›lohlávek, the incoming Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, will conduct JanáÄÂek's evocative score. The seven performances, sung in Czech, will run from May 5 to 24, 2007. Jenůfa is Washington National Opera's second mounting of a JanáÄÂek work, following The Cunning Little Vixen in 1993.
