Janácek's Jenufa Nominated Olivier Award

English National Opera's Jenůfa, coproduced with Washington National Opera and Houston Grand Opera, has received a nomination for the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Opera Producion. The Laurence Olivier Awards are the most prestigious theatre awards in the United Kingdom. Other nominees in the Best New Opera Production category include English National Opera's The Makropolous Case, English National Opera's Orfeo, and Opera North's Peter Grimes.

Winners will be announced at an annual star studded award presentation at Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on February 18, 2007.

Washington National Opera stages the critically acclaimed production of Jenůfa in its Washington premiere on May 5 with an incomparable international cast staring Patricia Racette in the title role, Catherine Malfitano as Kostelnicka Buryjovka, Kim Begley as Laca Klemen, Raymond Very as Steva Buryja, and Judith Christin as Grandmother Buryjovka.

The tragedy of infanticide and a woman's disfigurement builds to a dramatic tale of redemption and forgiveness in this tale of two half brothers both in love with their cousin. Renowned Czech maestro Jiří Bělohlávek, the incoming Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, will conduct Janáček's evocative score. The seven performances, sung in Czech, will run from May 5 to 24, 2007. Jenůfa is Washington National Opera's second mounting of a Janáček work, following The Cunning Little Vixen in 1993.
