
Music lovers and opera fans who were not able to attend the Met's sold-out live, high-definition (HD) transmissions that launched in movie theaters last month will be given another chance to experience the phenomenon. Beginning with an encore broadcast of Julie Taymor's production of The Magic Flute this week, the Met has launched a series of encore presentations in the United States, Canada, and Europe from January through March 2007.
"Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD," a groundbreaking series of opera performances being transmitted live in HD into movie theatres worldwide, launched on December 30 with the Met's English-language version of The Magic Flute. The historic performance reached a global audience of nearly 30,000 people and a total audience capacity of over 90 percent. The series continued this month with sold-out transmissions of I Puritani, starring Anna Netrebko, and The First Emperor, starring Plácido Domingo.
Through U.S. cinema partner National CineMedia, encore presentations began this week with The Magic Flute. Encores in the U.S. continue with I Puritani on Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00 PM (all time zones) and The First Emperor on Wednesday, March 7, at 7:00 PM and Sunday, March 11, at 1:30 PM (all time zones).
Canadian partner Cineplex Entertainment, will host encore presentations of I Puritani on Saturday, February 10 at 1:30 PM/ET (10:30 AM/PT), and The First Emperor on Saturday March 10 at 1:30 PM/ET (10:30 AM/PT).
"Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD" continues live from the Met with Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin starring Renée Fleming and Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Saturday, February 24 at 1:30 PM/ET; 10:30 AM/PT), Rossini's The Barber of Seville starring Juan Diego Flórez, Joyce DiDonato, and Peter Mattei (Saturday, March 24 at 1:30 PM/ET; 10:30 AM/PT), and Puccini's Il Trittico featuring a stellar ensemble cast (Saturday, April 28 at 1:30 PM/ET; 10:30 AM/PT).
City Screen, the Met's UK cinema partner, will continue its partnership with "Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD"Â with live transmissions of Eugene Onegin, The Barber of Seville and Il Trittico (All Met Live HD dates; 6:30 PM/GMT). The first of the trio will play nationwide at ten Picturehouse sites, with the following two operas each playing nationwide at twelve Picturehouse sites.
Danish cinema partner Nordisk Film is presenting taped performances of the entire series in theaters in Copenhagen and Aarhus. U.S. cinema partner, Emerging Pictures, is presenting taped performances of the entire series in select U.S. markets. -- www.metoperafamily.org
