Famous jam-band Phish, will begin their fall tour at Cobo Arena in Detroit on November, 18th, making their way through New England, and ending in Charlottesville, VA on December 5th. Rumor has it that Phish will likely be doing four additional performances in Miami from December 28th-31st. That schedule has not been confirmed as of this date. Check with the Phish website for more information.
"Phish was formed at The University of Vermont in 1983 by guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman. For their first gig, at a Halloween dance in the basement of the ROTC dormitory, the band was billed as "Blackwood Convention", a reference to a bidding convention in contract bridge. Their second gig — and their first billed as "Phish" — was November 3 in the basement of Slade Hall at UVM," says Wikipedia.
Often compared to the Grateful Dead, and with similarities to The Allman Brothers Band, Phish's music has been likened to an eclectic blend of improvisational rock, jazz, reggae, funk, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, bluegrass and classical among other styles. Phish's affinity for Vermont and relationship to the Grateful Dead, resulted in Ben & Jerry's naming a flavor of ice cream after each — "Phish Food" after the band and "Cherry Garcia" after the Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia.
Phish fans, also known as Phishheads are loyal, often following them around for weeks on end while they tour multiple cities, camping in fields and making a living along the way. Being a long-time Vermonter myself, I have a special affection for Phish.
