Kmart's National Layaway Week kicked off with radio show host of the The Steve Harvey Morning Show encouraging consumers to try laying away purchases online as an alternative to credit card shopping. Shop Kmart online and save time in long lines at the mall.

Radio personality Steve Harvey remembers what it was like to use layaway years ago. Harvey says, "I’ve been going to Kmart since I was a kid, when they had layaway for real. Kmart is not only in the community, Kmart actually cares about the community. This new initiative that they have taken on, ‘National Layaway Week,’ I think it’s a great idea.”

Layaway is simply laying away purchases for later. Unlike purchasing the products with credit cards and taking them home with you, layaway is a way to purchase an item without paying the entire cost at once. Installment plans allow the consumer to pay weekly until the toys are paid off, at which time the layaway is considered paid for in full, and can be taken home.

Layaway was a lot more popular before the age of credit cards. Mom used to put all our toys on layaway as early as October. We always wondered why she had to make a trip to the same store every payday. She never came out with anything but a smile on her face. Kids didn't understand what layaway was back then. And then magically, all the toys would appear under the tree on Christmas morning.

Layaway may have lost its appeal years ago, but it's making a big comeback with retailers like Kmart. Steve Harvey is helping Kmart promote an old-fashioned layaway program with a new online marketing plan. Everyone orders online these days. Who wants to get caught in traffic at the mall during Christmas shopping?

Kmart’s Online Layaway Program is an easy and affordable way of purchasing items online, pay for them over time, and take possession of the products after they're paid for.

If you're going to make monthly payments with a credit card anyway, you may as well try on-line layaway as an alternative. It's a trend toward helping consumers adopt more responsible spending habits. With debt and personal bankruptcy at an all time high, Kmart's push for on-line layaway is a smart thing. Christmas shopping could take on a whole new meaning this year!

Thanks to Steve Harvey and Kmart for making the Online Layaway Program available.
