If you thought it was still summer, think again. A nor'easter, the first major storm of the season for many, is barreling up the East coast and making a mess out of the weekend. With a possible rain-out of the Yankees/Angels game in NY, this storm may also be the end of leaf peeping in many areas as the strong winds and heavy rains bring down the last of the colorful foliage.
This is a strong Nor'easter. Coastal flooding may result as the winds drive the ocean water directly onshore. In some areas, the winds could also down tree limbs and lead to sporadic power outages, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow Hits The Poconos - As Thursday wears on, it's already snowing in the Poconos. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for as much as 4 inches of snow from now through Friday as a Nor'easter moves through the higher elevations of the Poconos.
New Jersey - A high wind warning has been issued for Ocean County and further south. Beach erosion is expected. A coastal flood watch has been issued across the entire state. Wet snow flurries were already reported in the higher elevations of northwestern Sussex County. Up to 3 inches of snow is expected through the weekend.
New York - NY is bracing for heavy rain, high winds and cold temperatures. Orange and Sullivan Counties might see some wet snow.
A coastal flood watch will likely go into effect tonight for Long Island, and Westchester County. A winter storm watch has been issued for Sullivan County.
The National Weather Service is "predicting sustained winds of 20-25 mph tonight and tomorrow, resulting in building seas and storm surges along the coast. That, coupled with "astronomically high tides," will likely produce coastal flooding tomorrow morning," the agency said. Temperatures will remain cold, in the mid-40s for highs and upper 30s for lows through Saturday.
Mid-Atlantic and New England - A cold soaking rain is expected to affect most of Route I-95 up the coast through Saturday. As the storm progresses, and bears down on southern New England, wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected. Heavy rains will also accompany the strong Nor'easter. In Connecticut, a coastal flood watch has been issued for Fairfield County.
Stay tuned to your local weather station for further updates on this Nor'easter.
