Easy Homemade Halloween Cupcakes & Ideas
The easiest cupcakes to make are with a boxed cake mix and a can of butercream frosting.

  • Bake the cupcakes and let cool completely - any flavor will do, but chocolate cupcakes seem to be the favorite among kids young and old.
  • Color either homemade frosting or canned frosting with orange, black and green cake coloring. Wilton makes the best coloring. Use the gel in the little bottles for the brightest most vibrant colors. Spoon each colored frosting in separate small pastry bags with a coupler ring and the cake decorating tips of your choice.
  • Small round pastry tips are for writing, whiskers, grass, spiders legs, etc. Wilton even makes a "grass" tip with many small holes so you can make a whole yard full of green grass with almost no effort. Star tips in various sizes are good for Dairy Queen type swirls and borders.
  • Assemble a selection of candies and jimmies like; licorice whips, Twizzlers, Skittles, Chicklets, gumdrops, marshmallows, green, black and orange M&M's for decorations.
  • Spread a thin layer of frosting over the entire cupcake, sealing the edges all the way to the paper cupcake liner. Let the kids decorate the cupcakes to resemble bats, spiders and spider webs, skull & cross bones and ghosts.
  • Another cute Halloween cupcake idea is to frost a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting, dip in chocolate jimmies, add Red Hots for eyes, and licorice strings for the spider's legs. Your kids will have a blast doing this themselves.
