Carved pumpkins have gotten more elaborate this year due to all the pumpkin carving templates being produced by online companies. Twilight's Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as Edward and Bella are favorites, as is Michael Jackson and the complete Harry Potter gang.

Companies like Dremel makes tools specifically designed for sculpting pumpkins. Pumpkin carving contests and exhibitions have popped up all around the country giving talented artists a chance to show off their newest Jack-o-lantern carving. Most craft stores sell tools and carving knives.

How To Carve a Pumpkin

  • Carving a pumpkin isn't hard at all provided you have the right tools, knives, pumpkin carving designs and a few directions.
  • First, take a few hours to hunt down just the right pumpkin. Watch out though. Some orchards, pumpkin farms and grocery stores charge by the pound. With a 10-20 pound pumpkin, you could be looking at a hefty price tag. Better go for the one-price-fits-all pumpkin.
  • Download the pumpkin carving templates you're interested in. Many websites give away free pumpkin stencils in exchange for checking out the rest of their site. See below for a list of pumpkin carving articles.
  • Lay down some newspapers or a big tarp to catch all the pulp and drippings.
  • Depending how big the pumpkin is, cut off the top with a sharp knife or a special pumpkin carving tool. Make sure not to cut too far down, just big enough to scoop all the guts out. Leave the stem intact, otherwise you'll have to glue it back on.
  • Using a large ice cream spade or heavy spoon, scoop all the pumpkin guts out, scraping the inside clean, leaving about an inch to inch and a half thickness so the pumpkin walls won't collapse.
  • Don't throw those pumpkin seeds away! Pumpkin Seed Recipes are great for using up the guts that would otherwise go in the garbage.
  • Position the pumpkin template on the gutted pumpkin and tape the corners down. You can either cut right through the pattern, or you can cut the pattern and trace the design on the pumpkin with a marker, at which point you could discard the paper template.
  • Follow the design that comes with the templates, being very careful not to cut too far, or yourself.
  • When you're happy with the carving job, add a candle, or a battery operated candle, and display. Or better yet, enter your Michael Jackson pumpkin in your local Pumpkin Carving Contest!
