Halloween costumes for men and women on a budget. Do-It-Yourself Halloween costumes for Alice in Wonderland, Jack Sparrow and Michael Jackson are popular with college students and couples because money is tight. With a little creativity, Halloween costumes don't have to break the bank this year.
Everyone is trying to save money on non-essentials this year, and Halloween is no different. You can either spend money at the local Spirit Halloween Store, or you can get creative and make DIY Halloween costumes. Some of these Halloween costume ideas are lame, but they're fun, cheap and easy to make.
Halloween Costume Ideas for Women
Alice in Wonderland - With the upcoming movie starring Anne Hathaway and Johnny Depp, cute little Alice is in big demand. Puffy blue dress with a full white apron tied in back, under which is a frilly petticoat and white leggings. Wear blue Mary Jane shoes to match the dress, and a long blond wig with headband or bow tied on top. Bring a striped Cheshire cat along to the party, and quote Alice by saying, "Oh! I beg your pardon..."
Ugly Betty - This one is easy and cheap. If you're not looking to make a fashion statement this Halloween, go as Ugly Betty. Dress down, wear thick, heavy framed glasses, and a long unkempt wig if your hair is short. If you have braces, even better. Don't forget the necklace with the big "B" on it.
Halloween Costume Ideas for Men
Michael Jackson - The most popular men's Halloween costumes this year, will likely be a tie between Michael Jackson and Twilight's Robert Pattinson. Dress up as Michael Jackson by wearing high-legged black pants, white t-shirt, black leather jacket, white socks, black shoes and one white glove. Wear pale colored makeup, and slick your hair back, leaving some bangs to hang in your face. Carry a boom box and sing "Billie Jean" every chance you get.
Jack Sparrow - The Pirates of the Caribbean would be lost without Jack Sparrow. Played by Johnny Depp, Jack is the modern pirate complete with a braided chin and dreads. Start with braided dreads with beads or wig, mustache, and a fake chin beard with two braids and beads at the end. A red handkerchief around the head, topped with a 3 corner pirate hat. Billowy dirty white blouse with long ruffled sleeves. Brown boots, brown pants, and long brown vest tied at the waist with a dirty white sash. Long sword and a fake pistol. Lots of black eye liner and mascara. Earrings, rings and lots of antique pirate bling. That should complete Jack Sparrow's costume.
Halloween Costume Ideas for College Students
Cereal Killer - Small individual-sized Post and Kellogg cereal boxes can be duct-taped to solid colored leggings or sweat pants and shirts, and stuck with plastic knives. Top it all off with a full size cereal box for a hat. Cut out one side large enough to fit your head, and attach a few smaller boxes haphazardly on top.
Bubble Boy - Distasteful or not, college students are already planning on going to Halloween parties as "Bubble Boy". Falcon Heene was made famous earlier this month, when the world was glued to the TV to see the him floating 50 miles across the state of Colorado in a helium balloon, only to find the balloon empty and no little boy inside. Read more about it here. The costume is tacky, but can be made with a cardboard box, duct tape and tin foil. An alternative would be dressing up in gray sweats or leggings and attaching silver balloons all over the body.
