RI Man Dies of H1N1: RIDOH Will Vaccinate College Students

Just weeks before college students are provided the H1N1 vaccine, the eighth Rhode Islander to fall victim of the H1N1 flu virus has died. The Rhode Island Department of Health has confirmed that a man between the ages of 50 - 60 has died due to complications of the H1N1 virus, also known as the swine flu.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH), "will begin to provide H1N1 vaccine to colleges and universities for student clinics the week of November 30. Each college and university will work with The Wellness Company to design the clinic(s) for their respective campus. Over the three-week period beginning November 30, all colleges, universities and technical schools in the state will hold clinics for students through age 24 who are enrolled at those institutions. Due to vaccine availability, college clinics will be scheduled in two phases."

Phase One will include all those colleges and universities with high concentrations of students living in dormitories and student housing – in other words, areas with highest risk of spreading the deathly virus. The schools named in phase one are:

  • Brown University
  • Bryant University
  • Johnson and Wales
  • Providence College
  • Rhode Island College
  • Rhode Island School of Design
  • Roger Williams University
  • Salve Regina University
  • University of Rhode Island

Phase Two will be held the week of December 14th, and focus on schools with non-residential student populations, and will only include students aged 24 and under who are currently enrolled at these schools:

  • Community College of Rhode Island (all campuses)
  • Lincoln Technical Institute
  • New England Institute of Technology
  • Providence campus of URI

Students will not be vaccinated unless they complete a consent form before the dates of the clinic, and will only be vaccinated in the schools in which they are enrolled. For more information, call HEALTH’s H1N1 Information Line at (401-222-8022) or visit http://www.health.ri.gov to download consent forms.

The Rhode Island H1N1 victim's identity is not known at this time.
