Singapore Symphony Orchestra Doubles Up

The violin and cello will both take centrestage at this Singapore Symphony Orchestra concert on March 24, where the orchestra will perform Brahms' Double Concerto, with soloists Qian Zhou and Li-wei Qin. The Double Concerto was Brahms' last work for orchestra, written partly as a peace offering to his friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom he had fallen out.

Winner of the 1987 Marguerite Long/Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris, Qian is currently a violin professor at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore. Cellist Li-Wei Qin was recently appointed Artistic Director of the Jin Mao Concert Hall in Shanghai and is also the Head of Cello Studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

The music of British composers also features largely in this programme, with three of Elgar's best-loved miniatures - including the supremely tender "love greeting" Salut d'amour - as well as the Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, the opera which brought world renown to the 31-year-old Benjamin Britten in 1945.

The SSO will be conducted by Maestro David Atherton, who was Music Director of the Hongkong Philharmonic Orchestra from 1989 to 2000. -- www.sso.org.sg
