Eight Conductors Showcased In National Conductor Preview

The American Symphony Orchestra League announced today the eight conductors to be showcased in The 2007 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview. The Preview, which is held every other year, is a two-day event that brings together highly talented conductors, who have not yet had significant exposure in the United States, with representatives from American orchestras.

This year's slate of conductors are David Charles Abell, Mikhail Agrest, Mikael Avetisyan, Andrew Constantine, Kayoko Dan, Paul Haas, Jaime Morales- Matos, and Jean-Philippe Tremblay. The winning conductors were chosen by an anonymous panel of conductors, administrators, and artist managers from a pool of 205 applicants. They were judged primarily on experience, talent, and their potential to assume a greater role with an American orchestra.

League President and CEO Henry Fogel said, "The Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview brings together a constellation of talent, providing a major service to orchestras who are searching for a music director and for conductors who are ready to take on greater responsibility in American orchestras. Helping to launch the careers of and providing resources for talented American conductors is a natural extension of the League's work in learning and leadership development."

About the Preview in Jacksonville

On March 13 and 14, the eight conductors will have the opportunity to conduct the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in front of an audience comprised of music director search committees, artistic administrators, and artist managers from across the United States. Each participant will have one hour of podium time, allowing orchestra officials and managers the chance to witness rehearsal techniques and abilities first hand. In addition, the League will facilitate meetings between conductors and prospective employers.

History of the Program

Since 1995, 54 conductors have been showcased in The Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, and more than 50 orchestras have engaged these conductors for various appointments as a direct result of the Preview. Past conductors have included Daniel Hege, music director, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra; Giancarlo Guerrero, music director, Eugene Symphony Orchestra; Shizuo Kuwahara, League conducting fellow, The Philadelphia Orchestra; associate conductor, Virginia Symphony Orchestra; and Peter Rubardt, music director, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.

Music Director Search Seminar

In tandem with the Preview is Music Director Search Seminar, which is designed to help music director search committees to assess their artistic needs, develop a music director profile and job description, design search strategies and timetables, and evaluate candidates' musical and leadership qualifications. The seminar also addresses the organizational dynamics of the search process, offering exercises in consensus building and teamwork. The 2007 Music Director Search Seminar will take place March 11-12 in Jacksonville, Florida and will be led by Henry Fogel, president and CEO, American Symphony Orchestra League; Bruce Ridge, double bassist, North Carolina Symphony, chair, ICSOM; Roger Saydack, chair, Eugene Symphony Search Committee; Donald Thulean, consultant and Seattle Youth Symphony board president; and Gideon Toeplitz, vice president, Arts Consulting Group.

The Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation

The Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation was formed in 1963 by Bruno Walter's daughter, Lotte W. Lindt, and several of his friends to perpetuate and honor the memory of Maestro Walter and to continue his lifelong interest in, and support of, musicians. Over the past forty years the Foundation has established a scholarship program for conducting students at the Juilliard School in New York, provided cash awards to winners in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions, and helped numerous arts-related institutions with operating support, including the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the New York Philharmonic. -- www.symphony.org
