National Semiconductor Corporation today announced the industry's lowest-power, 8-bit, 1 giga-samples per second (GSPS) dual CMOS analog-to-digital converter (ADC) qualified for use in broadband and high-speed communications satellite applications. Packaged in a 128-lead multi-layered ceramic quad flat package, the ADC08D1000WG-QV, at 800 mW per channel, consumes significantly less power than competitive products, while providing the gigahertz speed and greater effective number of bits (ENOB) necessary for reliable measurement of high-frequency signals.
The ADC08D1000WG-QV meets the industry's stringent space-grade specifications, including radiation levels of 120 MeV for single event latch-up (SEL) and 300K rad (Si) for total ionizing dose. As one of the key signal-path building blocks in communication satellite systems, this ADC delivers superior signal-to-noise and distortion performance at the lowest power in the industry to accurately capture real-world analog transmissions and convert them for processing in the digital domain.
The ADC08D1000WG-QV digitizes two input signals to 8-bit resolution at sampling rates up to 1.2 GSPS, while consuming just 800 mW per channel from a 1.9V nominal supply. By using an innovative fully programmable dual-edge sampling feature, the product can achieve 2 GSPS sampling from one channel by interleaving the two on-chip converters. Each ADC has a 1:2 demultiplexer that feeds two low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) buses, which reduces the output data rate on each bus to half the sampling rate.
Unique High-Performance Architecture
National's ADC08D1000WG-QV has a unique, performance-enhancing flash-folding/interpolating architecture. Folding reduces the number of comparators, and interpolation greatly reduces the number of front-end amplifiers, which provides a significant power savings and reduces the load on the input signal.
Key Technical Specifications
At a 1 GHz sampling rate, the ADC08D1000WG-QV achieves 0.15 least significant bits (LSB) differential non-linearity (DNL), while maintaining a high 7.4 ENOB at an input frequency of 498 MHz (Nyquist). The converter is designed with an extremely low bit-error rate (BER) of 10-18 and typically consumes less than 3.5 mW in the power-down mode. The ADC08D1000WG-QV guarantees "no missing codes"Â over the extended operating temperature range of -55 degrees C to 125 degrees C. The ADC08D1000WG-QV has an on-command calibration mode to prevent single event effects (SEE) from triggering unwanted calibrations. These features enable the product's high level of performance and accuracy in space-grade applications.
