Body identified as Somer Thompson

The child's body found in a south Georgia landfill yesterday has been identified as that of seven-year-old Somer Thompson from Orange Park, Florida. Sheriff Rick Beseler said today that the identification was based on clothing on the body and a birthmark.

The landfill in which the body was found is located approximately 50 miles from where Thompson disappeared on Monday. She was walking home from Grove Park Elementary School and arguing with another child. After her sister told her to stop, she got upset, walked ahead of the group and was not seen again.

As of this writing a suspect has not been apprehended. Sheriff Rick Beseler did not talk about evidence recovered at the landfill during his news conference. An FBI forensic unit is working with the police to process any evidence from the landfill. Beseler said that he still fears for the community.

An autopsy is planned for today by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which will likely give more insight into the girl's disappearance and death.

According to a previous article from Huliq, Beseler said the searches of the landfill were "precautionary" and not based on a tip. Police were led to the landfill after following garbage trucks that left the neighborhood where Thompson disappeared.

Orange Park, Florida is located in Clay County. It is a suburb of Jacksonville, and is just south of Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The area where Thompson disappeared is a heavily residential area.
