Camera pills replacing colonoscopies?

Technology takes a giant leap forward, or should I say inside, as a new camera bot can crawl your colon to inspect your insides.

The camera will be ingested like a pill, and will be remotely controlled by physicians as the camera crawls your intestines searching for tumors or other potential problems. The camera delivers very detailed photos of your colon as it takes a full two minutes to travel just one inch. Before the camera journey is complete, it will compile up to 870,000 images of the insides of your intestines.

Japanese RF System Lab has developed this fabulous little camera called the Sakaya endoscope capsule.

Only 8 hours after ingesting the capsule, a tiny camera that spins 360 degrees, and takes 30 two megapixel photos per second, will be transmitting these photos wirelessly to a an antenna in a vest the patient is wearing. The photos are saved to a standard SD memory card which your doctor can pop into a PC, and voila, a video ride through your intestines that the doctor can play as often as needed to determine the health of your intestines.

The great news for the patient is that he/she feels nothing during this process. Yes, you will be required to wear a vest which will have the power source for the camera, as well as the memory card, but compared to a colonoscopy and yards of tubing and anesthesia ?

Once the camera has completed its journey, the patient passes the camera like other body waste, naturally.

The Sakaya endoscope camera will begin clinical trials in the U.S. later this month.

Bon apetit!
