Nicole Kidman appeared on Capitol Hill yesterday, testifying before a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee that is considering legislation to address violence against women overseas. The committee is considering enacting legislation to protect women through humanitarian relief efforts and grants to local organizations working on this issue.

Kidman was questioned about whether or not Hollywood contributes to the escalating violence against women. She conceded that the movie industry probably has played a role by portraying women too often as weak sex objects. She was quick to add that she does not accept parts in this type of movie.

Kidman is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). UNIFEM is currently promoting the International Violence Against Women Act.

"In the real world, the laws go unenforced and impunity is the norm," Kidman said.

Legislation to protect women has stalled in the past. However, sponsor, Rep. Bill Delahunt, D-Mass., said he and others plan to reintroduce it soon.

Nicole Kidman decided to make her appearance on Capitol Hill because UNIFEM needs the money.
