Celebrate Chinese New Year At Manchester Art Gallery

Kung hei fat choy! (Happy Chinese New Year). This February, Manchester Art Gallery is working with the city's Chinese community to create a colourful and joyous celebration to mark the beginning of the Chinese year of the pig. Sunday 18 February 2007, 11am-5pm. Free family event.

On Sunday 18 February the gallery will be awash with activities for all family including face painting and drawing workshops, traditional Vietnamese and Chinese folk dancing, Chinese opera and classical music demonstrations, Tai Chi, and of course the much-anticipated highlight of the day, the Lion Dance.

Artwork created by some of Manchester's Chinese families will also be on display, the result of a partnership between the gallery, the Chinese Arts Centre and Wai Yin Chinese Women's Society.

"Chinese New Year is a big event for us here at the gallery," says curator for Life Long Learning, Meg Parnell. "Our annual Chinese New Year event is always full of exciting performances and lots of lively activities, for all the family to enjoy. It attracts a really diverse range of people, whether they are celebrating their own New Year or learning about a different culture's, and we hope that 2007 will see our biggest and most popular event yet."

The packed programme of events starts at 11am on Sunday 18 February, with activities inside and outside the gallery throughout the day. -- www.manchestergalleries.org
