Earthquake rattles buildings in Indonesian capital

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck an island off the coast of Indonesia's Jawa Barat province this morning. The quake was strong enough to shake buildings in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, about 120 miles to the east-northeast.

The epicenter of the quake was in the Sunda Strait, off the west coast of Jawa Barat province. The area is not heavily populated.

Officials at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency say the quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami. The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System estimates that the quake will create a moderate need for humanitarian intervention. There are no reports yet of death or damage caused by the quake.

Indonesia is still recovering from a more powerful earthquake earlier this month that left more than 1000 dead in western Sumatra.
