Baby food producer issues product recall

Plum Organics, a producer of baby foods based in Emeryville, California, has issued a recall of some of its products over concerns about the potential for botulism contamination.

The decision to issue the baby food recall came after routine testing revealed that a batch of the company's Apple & Carrot Baby Food in Portable Pouches was incorrectly formulated and failed to meet government standards. "The product did not meet the FDA guidelines for proper acidity level," Plum spokesman Paul Gerhardt said in a written statement today referring to company's baby food recall.

The current baby food recall affects Plum Organics Apple & Carrot Baby Food in Portable Pouches with a "best before" date of May 21, 2010 and UPC code of 890180001221 at the bottom of the package. The pouches were sold nationally at Toys 'R' Us and Babies 'R' Us outlets.

Consumers may return the product to the nearest store for a full refund. No other Plum Organics products are affected by the recall.

A statement from Plum Organics founder Gigi Lee Chang about the product recall today added, "no illnesses have been reported in connection with this product. We conducted extensive testing of samples of every Plum Organic product manufactured before and after this batch and all samples were found to be within the standard guidelines."
