The snowstorm that has dumped up to two feet of snow or more on the Mid-Atlantic region has also played hob with the region's transportation networks.
Interstate 95, the East Coast's main north-south highway, has been intermittently shut down from Maryland to New Jersey as plows could not keep up with the heavy snowfall and stranded motorists blocked travel lanes. This morning, Interstates 64 and 81 in Virginia were reported as completely snow-covered and closed to all traffic. State and county highway departments in all the affected states have declared emergencies, restricting travel to emergency vehicles and essential personnel.
Most flights into and out of the region's major airports -- Washington Dulles, Washington Reagan National, Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International, and Philadelphia International -- have been canceled since yesterday evening.
No surface mass transit is running anywhere in the affected region. In Washington, only underground portions of the Metro are in service; in Baltimore, the Metro is operating only in the subway tunnel; and in Philadelphia, only the Market-Frankford and Broad Street rapid transit lines are operating.
