Four decades ago the unnamed homeowner bought the house, in Cleveland OH, with the sculpture being a fixture of the backyard. As it turns out the bronze statue is by Mahmoud Mokhtar, a Paris-educated Egyptian artist cited as the father of modern Egyptian art.
It was bought b an unnamed collector at the Cleveland Auction Co. for the highest bid to date for a Mokhtar bronze: $118,000.
Luckily for the seller he didn't settle for $3000 from an antiques dealer a few years ago.
Shows the relative value of art is beyond the simple material and base price as human ingenuity and creativity take the base material and shape it into something higher.
