Munch's "History" Stolen From Norway Gallery

Edvard Munch, History

An important forerunner in expressionistic art, Edvard Munch's (1863-1944) lithographic version of "History" has been stolen from his native Norway.

The hand painted lithograph was stolen in a smash and grab robbery from a private gallery. Owner Pascal Nyborg reported the theft to the Oslo Police late Thursday.

Since then police have been trailing clues finding the getaway car and a large van. As of yet no suspects have been found.

The thieves used a stone to break a window then ran into the gallery to take the lithograph.

The hand painted lithograph, which was a study for the painting is valued at two million kroner ($355,000) though at auction in 2001 it sold for 200,000 kroner ($35,000.)

Munch's most famous painting The Scream is an icon of modern art around the world used in many pop culture references.

Upon his death in 1944 Munch bequeathed his works to the city of Olso in Norway.
