The Afghan minister of mines denies that he accepted a bribe of equivalent to 32 million U.S. dollars. The bribe said to come from a large Chinese mining firm is the largest reported today. This is the biggest accusation to date in a region swimming in opportunity for drugs, arms dealers, and other predatory business.

The allegations, if true, would be the largest corruption scandal to date. In a government regularly accused of being rife with graft. Such cases are one for the reasons the Obama administration has doubts as to the future of the Karzai government.

Corruption is one of the major problems in Afghanistan, it's recent low ranking in a report of corruption index is only confirmed from such allegations. Some comparisons to drug producing countries are apt as Afghanistan is still a major supplier of Opium to the world.

Coupled with the continuing issues related to security problems from interference Taliban bases inside Pakistan, rumors of insurgent support from Iran, and the indications of massive supplying of arms from China's military industry.

The recent problem cast doubt for the Obama presidency as to how effective a partner Hamid Karzai.
