Comic book art for sale

Starting in 1938 Joe Kubert has been a tireless artist in the comic book industry. Recently he has offered 18 covers and interior pages, published from the 1940s to 1990 for sale. Though he does not think much of his previous work many comic book fans will be enthralled.

Joe Kubert, 83, turned over a large collection of his original work to Heritage Auctions in Dallas, which will hold the first of several auctions, live and online. The demand for his original work is expected to be large since he worked on seminal works in the industry.

Starting his career during the golden age of comics has little attachment to his earlier and finds the interest amusing.

He has worked on icons such as "Archie and his friends," "Sgt. Rock," along with patriotic works during WWII and others at DC comics in its' early years.

His break through came with the adventures of Tor, a caveman-type character who first appeared in 1953. Recent works are the ground breaking "Fax from Sarajevo" a story received via fax from a family who escaped their home in the war torn Balkans and spent two years in ruined building, communicating to the outside world using a fax. As well as revisiting the Sgt. Rock character.

Kubert still works and is currently collaborating with his son, Adam on a Vietnam themed work for Vertigo Comics while still teaching at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Northern N.J.

He has received a number of awards: an Alley Award for Best Single Comic Book Cover, National Cartoonists Society Awards for best Story Comic Book, and an Eisner for "Fax from Sarajevo."

He started in comics books as an after school job when he was eleven. After six years he was making $5 a page more than his father a butcher.
