Tekelec, a leading developer of high-performance network applications for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks, today announced that Infonetics Research has recognized Tekelec as the North American market-share leader for media gateway port shipments for the first three quarters of 2006. Tekelec's 8000 Converged Multimedia Gateway also ranked second worldwide out of 14 companies evaluated in the report.
According to Infonetics, Tekelec shipped nearly five million media gateway switching ports worldwide and 3.4 million ports in North America during the period, outperforming nearly all of its competitors.
"Tekelec showed a strong performance in the media gateway market during 2006 and is continuing to demonstrate growth with its 8000 Converged Multimedia Gateway in North America and across the globe through direct and OEM sales channels," said Stùphane Tùral, principal analyst, Service Provider VoIP, IMS and FMC, Infonetics.
The Tekelec 8000 Converged Multimedia Gateway, one of the most widely deployed 3GPP Release 4/5/6 wireless media gateways in the global wireless carrier market, is used by many of the world's major carriers to help minimize capital and operational costs. It is a highly flexible, scaleable and reliable multi-fabric wireless media gateway, offering unlicensed mobile access (UMA), global system for mobile communications (GSM), code division multiple access (CDMA) and universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) features to handle both packet and circuit-switched voice traffic efficiently.
Tekelec continues to emphasize open, multi-vendor product interoperability and Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) standards with its next-generation switching portfolio. The Tekelec 8000 Converged Multimedia Gateway was tested with a number of the world's leading telecom carriers and vendors in the Global MultiService Forum's Interoperability 2006 (GMI) trial in October 2006. Through its participation in the trial, Tekelec aimed to demonstrate that the telecom industry is ready to adopt a "plug-and-play"Â model for best-of-breed complex network elements, including media gateways.
"Tekelec stands firm in our leadership and commitment to our customers and OEM partners, delivering next-generation switching solutions that support advanced new services, generate revenues and reduce operations costs,"Â said Jay Whitehurst, president and general manager, Tekelec Switching Solutions Group. "Continued recognition by industry experts such as Infonetics demonstrates our market leadership and strong position to help operators transition to the IMS future"Â - Tekelec.
