Google Chrome OS Rumored Next Week, Mac Browser To Follow

Release of the Google Chrome Operating System has been highly anticipated since its announcement back in July. Based on information received from a “reliable source” TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington says Chrome OS will be launched next week.

Google’s plan for the lightweight, open source operating system was to essentially keep the operating system out the way and get users on the Web quickly, where the majority of a user’s experience happens. The goal was to redesign the structure of an operating system, creating something that would simply work and not be cumbered with viruses, malware and security updates.

When Google made the announcement, the search engine giant said Chrome OS would be available on netbooks for consumers in the second half of 2010, but the code would be open-sourced later this year. As such, it is probably safe to assume the launch next week will be most useful for developers. The source code will be a bunch of text files, usually intended for developers to tinker with, so it might be beyond the average user to actually implement.

Confirmation is also out that Google Chrome will be coming to Macs in December, just as promised. Google Chrome product manager Nick Baum apparently wrote in a developer discussion list recently:

“We’ve noticed that many of you have updated your extensions to take advantage of the new UI. We'd like to encourage the rest of you to do so as well. The earlier you switch, the more time you will have to polish your experience for our Beta launch in early December.”

Either way, it’s just a matter of time before Google’s open source products, either the Chrome browser or Chrome OS, will be available to everyone.
