The Motorola Droid hit 250,000 sales in its first week, making it the fast-selling Android phone to date, according to market research firm Flurry.
The 250,000 number dwarfs T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G, launched Aug. 5, 2009, by more than four times (Flurry estimated the myTouch sold 60,000 units in its first week), but doesn’t come close to touching first week sales of the iPhone 3GS, launched June 19, 2009, (Flurry estimated it sold 1.6 million units).
Before drawing too many conclusions based on these numbers, it’s important to understand some background. The myTouch and Droid are first generation phones, compared to the iPhone’s third generation status. In addition, the myTouch and the Droid were only launched in the United States and the iPhone 3GS was released in 8 countries in June.
Verizon has poured in a reported $100 million in marketing support of the Motorola Droid, according to Ad Age. The campaign’s “I Do” ads got a lot of attention and position Droid as a better option than the iPhone.
The Droid boasts a bright screen, slide-out full keyboard, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi and of course its Android technology powered by Google.
Flurry’s analytic service tracks applications to approximately every two out of three unique iPhone and Android headsets. To determine first week sales, it detected new handsets within its system and then adjusted the number to account for varying levels of Flurry application penetration per handset.
More Android phones will be released in the coming weeks which will compete with the Droid.
