Snow and Winter Storm Warning in Houston

Snow is falling over most of southeastern Texas and the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Houston area Friday morning.

The Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto and Waller counties in Texas until 8 p.m. Central. According to the National Weather Service, an upper level low pressure system is approaching the Houston area and will create periods of moderate snow in addition to the widespread light snow.

The snow should continue until early evening with expected accumulations of .5 to 1.5 inches, with some areas receiving 2 to 4 inches.

Temperatures are expected to fall and approach freezing Friday afternoon and evening which will make for icy road conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Gusty winds will add wind chill making it seem even colder. Cold temperatures are expected to linger through Saturday.

The National Weather Service cautions those in the Houston area to travel with care, wear plenty of warm clothes, keep a flashlight handy and bring a cell phone to call for help.
