Yahoo! Program Allows Users to Control the Ads They See

Yahoo! launched a beta version of their new tool, the Ad Interest Manager, on Monday. The tool allows users to control the ads they are exposed to via the Yahoo! Ad Network.

Users can access the tool and see the actual categories Yahoo! has determined as behaviors (i.e. types of sites the user visits and searches the user conducts) and the relevant advertising which will be served up as a result. Users can then select or de-select the categories so they do or do not receive ads pertaining to that information.

The release of the Ad Interest Manager coincides with the kick-off of the Federal Trade Commission’s series of workshops focusing on online consumer target marketing and privacy issues.

The tool is currently available only to users in the United States, but should soon be available to users in Europe.

Future versions of the Ad Interest Manager are expected to allow users to create categories of interest that Yahoo! may have missed.
