Diane Sawyer Announces Last Week on 'Good Morning America'

Diane Sawyer announced Monday morning she will end her 10-year run as co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America” this week. She will be replacing Charles Gibson as ABC’s “World News” anchor in January.

The move was announced back in September, but the exacting timing of when Sawyer would leave GMA was unknown. Sawyer calculates she hosted over 2,880 GMA shows.

No official announcements have been made about Sawyer’s replacement, but it is rumored that George Stephanopoulos, host of ABC’s “This Week” and ABC’s Chief Washington Correspondent, will replace Sawyer on GMA.

After Sawyer’s announcement on-air, her co-anchors promised to highlight some of her greatest moments this week.

Back in September when the move was officially announced, ABC News President David Westin praised Sawyer’s career.

"Diane Sawyer is the right person to succeed Charlie and build on what he has accomplished," Westin said in a statement. "She has an outstanding and varied career in television journalism, beginning with her role as a State Department correspondent and continuing at '60 Minutes,' 'Primetime Live,' and most recently 'Good Morning America.'"

Saywer joined ABC in 1989 as the co-anchor of “Primetime Live.” Prior to joining ABC, she was the first woman to anchor CBS’s “60 Minutes.” She began her career in broadcasting in 1967 in Louisville, Ky.

Gibson also left GMA to host “World News” back in 2006.
