The NCAA is currently investigating Tennesee’s recruiting practice of using hostesses under head football coach Lane Kiffin’s administration.
The New York Times reports that the Tennessee hostesses controversy is a wide-ranging investigation, including interviews with prospects, their family members and high school administration.
The Tennessee recruiting hostesses traveled hundreds of miles to high school football games in attempts to lure targeted players to Knoxville. According to the Times, the hostesses are considered representatives of the university which means they cannot recruit players off campus. As such, Tennessee’s practice of using recruiting hostesses may be a violation of NCAA recruiting regulations.
The hostesses have become almost legendary with recruits, interacting with them on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. There have been reports of the Tennessee recruiting hostesses even holding up signs at the games saying “Come to Tennessee.”
Kiffin has been at Tennessee for one year and has already received numerous secondary violations from the NCAA, which some speculate spurred the wide-ranging investigation on the recruiting hostesses.
