Making video calls in high definition, from your TV is just around the corner. Skype, a popular VoIP service, announced Tuesday that LG Electronics and Panasonic will introduce HDTvs at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show with Skype’s software embedded.
The internet call-enabled HDTVs are set to ship and be ready for purchase mid-2010 and will be offered with optional HD webcams. These HD webcams can be plugged into the TV and can pick up sound and video from a couch distance, according to a PC World report.
In addition, Skype is now supporting HD calls from a PC. The latest version of its software, Skype 4.2 Beta for Windows, supports 720p video calling in a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second. An HD webcam will be needed to take advantage of the new software.
faceVision and In Store Solutions are introducing new HD webcams this week. Look for the Skype Certified HD logo to select compatible models.
So far there has been no announcement about Skype HD capabilities for Mac.
To place an HD call, Skype recommends having at least a 1Mbps connection.
Skype was founded in 2003 and is responsible for eight percent of global international calling minutes. According to Skype’s Web site, over one-third of Skype-to-Skype calls are video calls.
