The 21-page report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was released Friday at a conference of experts in Paris. The study was reviewed by 2,500 scientists from 130 countries.
The scientists say they are more than 90 percent certain that man-made pollutants are causing the Earth to experience higher temperatures, rising sea levels, and erratic weather.
The panel's head, Indian climatologist Rajendra Pachauri, says greenhouse gas levels in our planet's atmosphere have not been this high in 650,0000 years.
The U.N. report, Climate Change 2007: the Physical Science Basis, is aimed at pressing governments and leading companies around the world to adopt policies that will curb the emission of greenhouse gases released into the air.
Some greenhouse gases are naturally occurring, while others are made-made pollutants, such as emissions from burning fossil fuels. The gases trap energy from the sun that would otherwise reflect back into space. - VOA News
