A shocking study reveals that lung cancer is the second leading type of cancer diagnosed in Welsh men and women. The study is focusing on location in correlation to smoking cigarettes. In the past four years, there has been a 10 percent increase among women. Considering the discoveries about smoking and cancer, the statistics are alarming, especially because the percentage of the increase in men getting lung cancer isn't as high as in women.
Lung cancer symptoms generally begin with a chronic cough that may affect breathing or cause wheezing. Other lung cancer symptoms include bloody mucus, hoarseness, loss of appetite, weight loss and fatigue.
“While we are making some excellent progress in the treatment of breast cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer to the point that people’s lives are being extended and the condition cured, lung cancer remains a major problem and still has a poor prognosis, " states Dr Simon Noble, a consultant in palliative care at Cardiff University and the Royal Gwent Hospital.
There are two types of lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. These lung cancers have two different types cancer cells that exist within lung cavities. The pleura is a thin membrane that covers the outside of each lung. The pleura also lines the inside wall of the chest cavity, which creates a sac called the pleural cavity. The pleural cavity contains a small amount of fluid that helps the lungs move smoothly in the chest when you breathe. (According to the National Cancer Institute)
It's those cavities that develop the cancer cells because of various reasons, many of which can be avoided. Some of the leading causes of lung cancer are smoking, being exposed to second-hand smoke, getting radiation therapy to the breast or chest, being exposed to asbestos, radon, chromium, nickel, arsenic, soot, or tar and living in an area with heavy air pollution.
The statistics are showing that the leading cause of the increase in lung cancer is due to smoking cigarettes, and the majority of the women live in lower income areas. Lung cancer treatment is extremely invasive and, as Dr. Simon Noble mentioned, still has a poor prognosis.
