Survey Reveals Hair Loss Mysteries

A recent survey revealed how little Americans understand the reasons for hair loss. Proper and effective hair loss treatment is another mystery. Respondents noted that hair was one of their best features, next to eyes, but still didn't understand the science behind the loss. With hair loss affecting 40 percent of American men and 25 percent of American women, it sounds like people need some hair loss education.

Stress is seen as the leading cause for hair loss, according 75 percent of the men surveyed. Always wearing hats was cited by 35 percent of respondents, along with 34 percent saying hair loss happened from over-styling. Apparently, all of them are wrong. Hair loss, according to Rogaine, is 95 percent hereditary. The American Hair Loss Association (AHLA) however, claims that the environment has an affect on hair loss as well.

"What people don't always know is that Hereditary Hair Loss accounts for 95 percent of all hair loss, and can affect men as early as their late teens and early twenties," says hair loss expert Dr. Robert Leonard, founder and chief surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates and member of the Board of Governors for the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. "And by age 40, approximately 40 percent of women will experience some degree of thinning hair," he adds.

Viable hair loss treatment appears to be as much of a mystery as why hair loss happens. About half of the men felt that a healthy diet, vitamins or hair products such as thickening shampoos or serums are effective hair loss treatment solutions. The AHLA states that the industry of hair loss treatment is practically unethical, considering that 99 percent of the products are ineffective.

"The truth is healthy diets, hair vitamins and thickening shampoos, conditioners and serums are not effective treatments for regrowing hair," Dr. Leonard says. "People may not understand there's a difference between hair health and hair regrowth, and that temporarily increasing the appearance of thicker hair is not the same as treating hair loss."

The survey also revealed that spouses would rather their better halves be overweight than bald. Younger Americans, 57 percent of them, stated they were not attracted to people with thinning hair. Maybe it's time to pull out the Rogaine, because researchers are saying Rogaine hair loss treatments are the only way to go.

"If you suffer from hair loss, or hair loss runs in your family, the best thing you can do is get a handle on what works," says Dr. Leonard. "ROGAINE® is the only topical brand FDA-approved to regrow hair. In clinical testing, Men's ROGAINE® Foam with five percent minoxidil regrew hair in 85 percent of men with twice daily use after four months, and most women experience hair regrowth with Women's ROGAINE® Topical Solution with two percent minoxidil after six months."

The survey, Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow, was conducted on 1,001 American men and women, ages 18 and older in November of 2009. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population over ages 18 and older.
