Non-Surgical Procedure Helps Diabetes

The Ninth Annual Surgery of the Foregut Symposium and Endoscopic Natural Orifice Surgery Day from February 14 to 17 at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida will be announcing its EndoBarrier™ Gastrointestinal Liner and EndoBarrier Flow Restrictor by GI Dynamics, specialists in non-surgical, endoscopic treatments for type 2 diabetes and obesity. The highlight of these diabetes treatment and obesity operations aim to attack the diabetes epidemic with up-to-date technology.

GI Dynamics feels the exponential increase in levels of obesity and diabetes is alarming and that "global and innovative solutions are clearly needed." So far, 280 enrolled patients revealed clinical evidence that proves the Endobarrier provides a contemporary, non-surgical approach to treating obesity, which in turn, improves type 2 diabetes and facilitates weight loss. Their plans to market Enobarrier are specifically underway now that Alex Escalona, M.D., Department of Digestive Surgery from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is highlighted the gastrointestinal liner at Florida's convention.

“I look forward to presenting clinical study information for the EndoBarrier, a compelling, emerging endoscopic technology, to my colleagues in the endoscopy and bariatric surgery fields during NOTES Day at the Surgery of the Foregut Symposium,” commented Dr. Escalona. “This symposium provides an excellent opportunity to share my own clinical experience with the EndoBarrier, as well as additional safety and efficacy data from clinical trials conducted to date, as a promising non-surgical treatment option for patients suffering from type 2 diabetes and obesity.”

Aiming to mimic the effects of gastric bypass surgery for obesity, the EndoBarrier Gastrointestinal Liner is inserted into the GI tract from the mouth. The liner then creates a barrier between food and intestinal walls, without surgery. Obese people with type 2 diabetes and at-risk, over-weight patients have already added to the body of evidence proving the liner's effectiveness.

GI Dynamics is a company that continually focuses on non-surgical treatment for type 2 diabetes and obesity. The EndoBarrier Flow Restrictor plans to double the amount of weight-loss, along with the liner. Even though details are given in depth on the Flow Restrictor, GI Dynamics states they are "collaborating with experts in endocrinology, gastroenterology, bariatric surgery and medical weight loss on these efforts" in the hope to achieve a healthier body mass index in obese and type 2 diabetes patients.
