Tai Chi Advances Diabetes Treatment

Tai Chi studies reveal evidence of improving diabetes, diabetes treatment and helping prevent the growing disease. Exercise has shown to help control blood glucose levels, but tai chi specifically targets cellular uptakes and glucose metabolism. Benefits also extend to diabetes symptoms, such as hypertension, heart disease and stress.

Described as an internal Chinese martial art, tai chi is comprised of gentle movements focused on stress reduction, stretching and breathing techniques that allow the mind and body to connect. Reducing stress through physical activity encourages healthy blood glucose metabolism because it decreases body fat, thus causing insulin release to be more sensitive.

According to Tai Chi for Diabetes, Dr. Paul Lam states “Studies have shown that Tai Chi improves cardiorespiratory function, hypertension, muscular strength, flexibility and cholesterol level, these in turn minimize complication of diabetes.”

Tai chi educational is available in almost every city across the U.S. and by Dr. Paul Lam's DVD and handbook package that can be ordered online. “The Tai Chi for Diabetes program is based on Sun and Yang style tai chi. Besides the fundamental 11 movement tai chi, it contains an advanced 9 movement set, warm-up, wind-down, and Qigong breathing exercises.”

Two different studies were responsible for evidence that proved tai chi exercise improved blood glucose levels, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The study, conducted by researchers in Australia and Taiwan, comprised of a 12-week TCC exercise program that decreased HbA1c levels, along with an increase in Th1 reaction. The largest improvements were seen in patients with type 2 DM.

The levels of difficulty range drastically, but investigators and tai chi experts say overall, the activity is gentle and easy. People at all levels of fitness can begin training at any time after approval of their medical doctor. Patients suffering from serious heart conditions must be cautious, but they are not ruled out of the benefits of tai chi exercise. Other people that must consult their doctor first are those with joint or spine conditions, are pregnant, or have severe osteoporosis.

This type of exercise is also affordable and doesn't require extra equipment. Everything is low impact and suitable for everyone at all levels because tai chi emphasizes technique over strength. “To improve the condition and quality of life for people with diabetes, to prevent people from developing diabetes [and is] an excellent introduction to tai chi for practically anyone.”
