Old Church Converted to Lavish Home

A historic church that's for sale in Woodstock, New York for $879,000 is not meant for future church congregations. The 1861 dwelling is a permanent live-in residence that's been restored numerous times since 1963, over a hundred years after its original building date. Woodstock, NY, a town in the Catskill Mountains, has a population of about 6,200 and is known for being an arts colony.

According to the New York Times Great Homes and Destinations, the town even has its own cemetery that is dedicated and limited to only artists. Even the local police department's insignia is comprised of a harp, a painters palette and theater masks. What might be most appealing to some of the old church's future owners however, is that Manhattan is only 2 hours South.

American landmarks are treasures, considering we don't have the historical landmarks that Europe and other ancient civilizations still have, but living in one is a unique venture. The interior description explains that are still original details "including leaded stained-glass panels in the great room, a hand-carved limestone fireplace and pressed tin walls and ceilings."

The bell tower still existed but serves as a sitting room that is reachable via spiral staircase. The entire square footage is 1,560 square feet, but a meadow with a fire pit takes over the exterior grounds, extending the grandeur of the historical beauty far beyond an orthodox small house.

The U.S. president during the time when the church was originally built was none other than Abraham Lincoln. The country was in a rough state of affairs because of the beginning of the Civil War and fighting had officially begun. To live in a dwelling from that time period would be surreal and significant to American history.
