Florida is one of the top states in the U.S. that is suffering from a massive foreclosure rate. Miami and Orlando are both in the top 15 highest foreclosure rates the country, so it might not be so surprising that one of their mayors hasn't paid his mortgage in 2 years. According AccountingWEB, an unpaid mortgage isn't even the worst of his problems however.
Oscar Alfonso, the mayor of a tiny 3 island community in Florida's North Bay Village, is not the most lawful man according to one of his neighbors. Ironically, Alfonso is also in trouble for $200,000 in back taxes owed to the Internal Revenue Service as well. The community is on the John F. Kennedy Causeway.
Alfonso was elected mayor in 2008 after being elected to the North Bay Village's city commission in 2004, all despite is unlawful reputation. Allied Mortgage & Financial Corp. is the company that gave him the $550,000 home loan, which hasn't seen a mortgage payment since March 2008. Alfonso's home is also in violation of city code after building an illegal second story.
"He has until March 19 to pass final inspection,"stated City Manager, Matthew Schwartz, to Riptide, which was printed in Miami New Times on February 22. "When it comes to code enforcement of elected officials, you have to be more stringent." The mayor has apparently refused to comment so far and will most likely be forced out of his home.
